Innovation 1: Light Bulb Saver

Business Offer

Willing to license manufacturing and selling rights

Description:

This project was undertaken for a client, Mr. A. D. Walsh, who has invented a means for extending the life of light bulbs.

It is well known that light bulbs often fail when first turned on. This is due to the sudden surge of current experienced by the bulb. There are existing devices available that employ electronic circuits to reduce or soften this surge. However these are quite expensive. Mr Walsh has devised a light bulb fitting which include one or two "thermistors" (thermal-resistors). As the light bulb is switched on the initial surge of current is experienced by the thermistor until these heat to approx 125 degrees centigrade. Then the resistance rapidly drops. The current is then drawn by the light bulb. This effect can be seen as a very minor delay when the bulb is turned on.

PES Ltd designed, constructed and tested a first-prototype, which works very well. This is now being used by the client to demonstrate the concept to potential manufacturers.

Patent Status: Mr Walsh's invention is fully protected by UK patent coverage.
